Wilhelmshaven also boasts several stadiums. The largest open air stadium is the Jade stadium with room for 7,500 spectators. This stadium has been used several times in the past for matches involving the German junior football teams.
The largest sports hall in Wilhelmshaven is the Nordfrost-Arena with room for 2,500 spectators.
The ‘nautimo’ indoor swimming pool (1000 m2 pool area, fun pool with slide, flow channel and sauna) is used by recreational swimmers as well as by clubs and schools. The ‘Freibad Nord’ open air swimming pool in the north of the city boasts a 50-m long pool.
An 18 hole golf course covering 70 hectares is also available.
Water sports are naturally very popular in Wilhelmshaven, with a large number of clubs involved in sailing, canoeing, rowing, diving and surfing.
Every year in the first days of July, the big “Weekend on the Jade” event attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the big port, the southern beach and the navy arsenal. Another big event takes place at the end of the sailing season at the beginning of October when two dozen large sailing ships dock in Wilhelmshaven as part of the “JadeWeserPort Cup”.
Harbour cruises through the navy port and the transhipment facilities along the deep navigable channel, and trips around the Arngast lighthouse, not to mention cruises to Helgoland out in the North Sea, make for an enjoyable day out.
